WorkCover Queensland

WorkCover Queensland are supporting the Queensland Government’s initiative to encourage businesses to employ more apprentices by offering a discount on their premiums for employers hiring apprentices.

The ‘apprentice discount’ will apply from 1 July 2017, and the saving applies through removing apprentice wages from the premium calculation.  The level of cover for apprentice employees however remains the same – all employees – including apprentices, will continue to receive the same level of cover if they are injured in the course of their employment.

In order to qualify for the discount, an employer must employ and pay wages to at least one apprentice.  An apprentice for workers’ compensation purposes, must sign a training contract with their employer to undertake an apprenticeship declared under the Further Education and Training Act 2014.  This does not include trainees.  The discount applies to wages paid to apprentices for work that relates to their apprenticeship.  Any wages paid to an apprentice before or after the apprenticeship, and for roles other than the duties specified within the training contract will not qualify for the discount.

Employers will need to renew online or over the phone to receive the discount.

If you have any questions about the apprentice discount, you can contact WorkCover Queensland on 1300 362 128 or their website at , or contact our office to speak to Jodi Elder on 07 4638 1100.
