We would like to congratulate and recognise Carolyn Richardson’s recent achievement on receiving her 40 year membership pin from CPA Australia. This recognises the experience, knowledge and character that Carolyn has demonstrated over the last 40 years working as a Certified Practising Accountant.
Here are a few thoughts from Carolyn about her years in practice.
“Forty years ago – it seems like such a long time. It was all about star wars and Saturday night fever – movies that still take us on a journey of space adventure and disco music.
For me starting out in public accounting – it was about paper and ink, the old adding machine with its roll of never ending paper and dissection pads with its columns. The hope each day that there would be no problem and that it would all add up and balance. Debits and credits were the order of the day.
There was one huge computer – needing its very own room with its very own operator – the noise was deafening as it clanged and rattled but then the daisy wheel printer would start. Now I have three computer screens on my desk, no adding machine and minimum paper and pens. We have data files online in the cloud instead of shoe boxes crammed with receipts, some covered in coffee stains or worse.
Two thirds of my career has been with Cheesman Applegarth & Partners. Initially when I graduated as their first female accountant and now back in a senior role. The firm has excellent professional and work ethics with the security of being a long established firm in the community.
As the world changes so does our role in the accounting area. We are adapting with our clients and providing compliance and business advisory services whilst keeping up to date with developments.
Another forty years for me? Perhaps not that many”
On your achievement Carolyn, congratulations from the staff and partners of Cheesman Applegarth.
